You don’t have to be an athlete to enjoy our sport, but by joining Croyde Surf Life Saving Club, you’ll get more confident in and around the sea. You’ll make new friends and have fun. And (most importantly) you might even help to save someone’s life one day.
Children can join Nippers from 6 years old up until 13. We run fun, safe sessions teaching the kids how to be safe in the water and how to help others be safe too.
Nippers can start as early as 6 years old, but they will need to be able to swim at least 50m with a recognised stroke (ie. not doggy paddle) for their own safety. Because we aren’t a swim club, we recommend that children continue to go to swimming lessons separately to help them develop their technique.
We coach a whole range of skills in Nippers: from how to swim through a breaking wave to how to spot a rip tide. From how to tow an casualty to how to catch a wave on their paddle boards and surf it back in.
The year is split into two: from late September to the end of April we’re in the warmth of Ilfracombe pool. From May through the summer we’re on the sand and surf of Croyde Bay, as well as the beautiful surroundings of Putsborough beach for a weekly session for our youngest nippers.
Our Juniors use all the same kit as the adult Masters: fibre-glass rescue boards, surf skis and the rescue tube. They can also join our Monday night winter circuit training. Once they’re 16+ they can row in our surfboat too.
All of our 14 – 19 year old youth team can train (and compete) in:
* Surf Ski
* Surf Rescue Board Paddling
* Surf Swimming
* Beach Events – flags & sprints
Some of our older youth members are qualified RNLI beach lifeguards, qualifications they’ve earned through the club. We encourage our youth members over 16 to work towards the SLSGB Surf/Beach Lifeguard award, which means they can be employed as a professional beach lifeguard in the UK and abroad.
